DOMINICA CELEBRATES CARNIVAL 2016! : Discover Dominica, the Nature Island

DOMINICA CELEBRATES CARNIVAL 2016!

The Nature Island is abuzz with Carnival activities, leading up to a crescendo of excitement on Feb. 8 & 9. Dominica's Carnival, also known as Mas Domnik, The Real Mas, is the most festive season on the island. The theme of the 2016 celebration is, "Spirit of the Real Mas," with Carnival activities taking place across the Nature Island leading up to the culmination.

Carnival highlights for 2016 include a full array of calypso competitions, pageants, parades and jump-up, a type of exciting street dance!

Calypso: Dozens of Carnival musicians, or Calypsonians, compete for the "Calypso Monarch" title. Elimination rounds lead up to the grand finale. Dominica's 2016 Carnival features the premiere of the Bouyon Monarch Competition! Bouyon, which originated in Dominica, is a mix of traditional and modern music, and is popular across much of the Caribbean. Bouyon competitors will battle for the title of Bouyon Monarch!

2016-Dominica-Carnival-Queen-Candidates webPageants: These popular events showcase the talents and beauty of Dominica's women (and men), in pageants such as the Princess Show; the Teenage Pageant; and the Mother's Queen show, celebrated under the theme "Nurturing our Future." The Mr. Caribbean pageant is being featured for the first time at Dominica's Carnival. Of course the highlight of pageants will be the National Queen Show carded for February 5.

Jams, Jump-Ups & Parades: The Traditional Mas Parade and Costume Parades are planned for Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 8 & 9. Events feature costume bands and street dancing known as "jump-up." On Ash Wednesday the excitement continues with Téwé Vaval, a fun mock funeral procession with "mourners" gathering to "bury" Vaval, the spirit of Carnival. The ceremony culminates with the burning of the effigy of Vaval, which signifies the close of the Carnival celebration.
